Frequently Asked Questions
1. How do
I write to Sweet Reason?
Click
the CONTACT link on my home page.
2. When will the answer to my letter appear?
It's hard to answer this question. Sometimes several letters arrive close together, but
for you to get a really good answer, there can only be one or two replies in a column.
Most letters to Sweet Reason are
answered. Please check each new column.
3. You don't print all letters? How do
you choose?
Again, most letters to Sweet Reason are answered. Sometimes there's just a question of judgment, and not all
decisions can be explained in advance. Here are some kinds that are not answered:
If a letter asks for a partisan political opinion, or printing it would look like Sweet Reason is endorsing the letter-writer's
opinion, the letter will not be printed (even if I happen to agree!) This policy is to
ensure that people of various political viewpoints feel welcome to write.
Letters that seem to emphasize general criticism of a religion, or religions in general, rather than the writer's
personal difficulties, will not be answered. The topic you're writing about may be
appropriate for another department of Humanist Network News, or some other
publication, but it's outside the scope of this column.
There are some letters that should be answered by other experts: Sometimes, a problem is
so severe you need to talk a therapist, an attorney, or another professional. When
possible, I will say so in a reply, but sometimes that can't be done, or the answer can't
be published quickly enough. Please see this site's resource page for suggestions on finding the help you
need.
Letters
of support: Thank you! They are always appreciated (very much!). There isn't room to
publish them in the Sweet Reason column though every bit of space there is for
answering requests for help.
4. Do you publish comments or
criticisms of your columns?
Sometimes, especially when they add to the possible solutions to a problem. Some
columns titled "Readers' Remarks" are in the Column Archive, and they will give you an idea of the kinds
of remarks that may be published. Even when there isn't space to print constructive
criticism, I do pay attention!
You can also consider writing your comments about "Sweet Reason" , with a
link to the column on your mind, on your favorite discussion forum. Then you might get a
conversation going!
5. I'd like
permission to reprint one or more Sweet Reason columns.
6. Does my
letter have to be about religions or conflicts concerning religion?
No, it doesn't. Sweet Reason also answers
questions like, "How can I help my husband get in
touch with his heritage?" or, "How
can I talk with my spouse about our sexual relationship?" These questions will be
answered according to the same guidelines as
questions that do happen to concern religious issues.
7. A link in one
of your old columns doesn't work, what should I do?
Please
write to sweetreason@humanists.net with the date
of the column and the name of the link, and the link will be updated as soon as possible.
If you found the updated URL (for example, by exploring the website for the resource, or
using a search engine), please include that information in your email.
8. Is Sweet Reason on MySpace or
Facebook?
MySpace si, Facebook no.
Come make friends at http://www/myspace.com/sweetreason.
9. Can we invite Sweet Reason to speak at a
meeting of my group?
Thanks for asking, but no. Until I've
recovered from some injuries in an automobile accident, I'm not able to accept speaking
invitations. I will post an announcement when the situation changes.
